Investigations and monitoring for Opioid Overdose

Investigation :
1. To confirm, UDT can report positive content within 24H use
2. To monitor symptom of withdrawal – Clinical Opioid Withdrawal Scale or Subjective Opioid withdrawal scale

Immediate management for Opioid Intoxication

· Naloxone should be administered
· Dosing of naloxone:
o typically 0.05 to 0.1 mg intravenously,
o Repeat doses of 2 mg may be required every 3 to 4 minutes for a total of 10 mg.
· Activated charcoal may be used to decontaminate the gastrointestinal tract in cases of oral opiate overdose, which can be given up to 2 to 3 hours after ingestion.
· Most patients who overdose on opiates and experience a reversal with naloxone are admitted for observation for at least 12 to 24 hours.
