What sense of identity do Irish people have?

It is a stronly polarized society in which ethnicity, family politics and especially religion are very important. The two groups are: Protestants (Loyalists or Unionists) whose ancestors came from Scotland or England and they want northern Ireland to remain part of the UK; and the Catholics (Republicans or Nationalists) whose ancestors were native Irish and they want Northern Ireland to become part of the Irish Republic. They live side by side in almost total separation and often do not communicate till some meet in university. This is especially the case among the working class although attitudes are gradually softening.
