QoS - QoS Models

4 important questions on QoS - QoS Models

What are the 3 diffrent QoS implementation models?

1. Best Effort. (QoS is not enabled)
2. Integrated Services (IntServ) Applications signal the network to make a bandwidth reservation and that they require special QoS treatment.
3. Differentiated Services (DiffServ) The network identifies classes that require special QoS treatment.

How does the QoS model of IntServ work?

The Integrated Services QoS models uses Resource Reservation Protocol to reserve resources like bandwidth on the network and provide Call Admission Control to prevent other IP Traffic to use the resources.
To be able to accomplish this the IntServ model needs to support, build and maintain RSVP path state for every flow.

How does the IntServ QoS model establish Reservations?

The sender starts with sending a RSVP path message along the same path is uses to send data to the receivers.
The data in the RSVP Path messages is stored in the RSVP Path State of each node.
The receiver responds with an RSVP Reservation Request (RESV). On each hop on the return path it will reserve the bandwidth.

How does the QoS model of DiffServ work?

It does not use a signaling protocol or RSVP flow states. Instead it is managed on a hop by hop basis with QoS policies configured independently on each node.

It is the most popular and widely used QoS model.
