What is the spinal cord? What does it do?

The spinal cord is a long, thin, delicate structure that is part of the central nervous system. It runs from the base of the brain down the middle of the back, inside the spine, which protects it. Its main job is to carry messages between the brain and the rest of the body. These messages allow us to move, feel sensations like touch or pain, and respond quickly through reflexes. Different pairs of spinal nerves branch off at different levels to control specific parts of the body. The spinal cord is protected by layers called the meninges and by cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Inside, it has grey matter, which contains nerve cell bodies, and white matter, which contains the nerve fibres that carry signals.
