Phonemes, allophones, voicing, aspiration - How we produce speech

3 important questions on Phonemes, allophones, voicing, aspiration - How we produce speech

The three systems that make it possible to produce speech?

  1. Articulatory system
  2. phonatory system
  3. respiratory system

How do you produce a voiceless sound?

For voiceless sounds, the vocal cords and the arytenoid cartilages are held wide apart as in relaxed breathing. This allows the pulmonic airstream to escape freely.

Wow do you produce a voice sound?

For voice, the vocal cords vibrate at high speed in the airstream produced by the lungs. The arytenoids are firmly closed. Vocal cords vibrations are far too fast to see with the naked eye. The vibration is constantly changing but occurs on average 130 times a second for male voices, and 230 times per second for females. Longer and larger vocal folds produce slower vibrations. The larger dimensions of the male vocal folds mean that men’s voices are deeper in pitch than those of women.
