Brocas is involved with speech production and producing language is made hard while comprehension remains relatively conserved. Wernikes is involved with language comprehension, might speak fluently but language often lacks meaning as comprehension is compromised. -
What is FMRI and how does it help us to study the brain?
FMRI detects changing in flow of the brain, measures blood flow.
This is helpful when studying the brain as it is safe/non-invasive, blood flow is correlated with neuronal activation so we are inferring that more blood flow in an area of the brain mean there is more neural activity. -
What is TMS? How is it helpful and what needs to be done before using TMS?
A non-invasive technique that disrupts specific brain activity for a fraction of a second, it allows us to investigate the role of the areas of the brain being disrupted in human functioning.
Participants will do a FMRI before TMS due to everyone having subtle differences in brain structure location so doing a FMRI allows for knowing precisely what region the TMR will be disrupting. -

Contrast temporal and spatial summation
Temporal summation is when there are lots of different inputs coming in at quick succession and spatial summation is many different inputs coming in at the same time. -
Describe how chemical messengers (neurotransmitters) transfer information from one neuron to the next
When the action potential reaches the synapse, they the calcium doors open calcium will flow into the cell through diffusion and then when calcium is in the cell some neurotransmitters ventricles will merge with the neuron membrane and open up releasing the neurotransmitters, due to diffusion only some will attach to receptors on the post synaptic cell.
