    On what basis does the organization group positions into units? There are 6 bases of grouping:

  1. Grouping by knowledge and skill. > Surgery, psychiatry.

There are two essential bases of grouping. What are those essentials?

  1. Market grouping. Grouping activities by the ends, the ultimate markets served by the organization.
  2. Functional grouping. By the means, the functions it uses to produce its products and services.

Work flow interdependencies create a psychologically complete task. Market based grouping > a sense of territorial integrity they control an organizational process. Problems solved by mutual adjustment. A single manager in charge of the work flow.

Interdependencies related to specialization > functional grouping. When specialists are grouped together, they learn from each other, feel more comfortable among their own. Work judged by managers expert in the same field.

Describe Scale interdependencies:

Groups formed to reach sizes large enough to function efficiently. Every faculty needs ICT. One ICT employee per faculty. Encourages process specialization.

Describe Social interdependencies:

People prefer to be grouped on the basis of getting along > Encourages process specialization. Work of specialists makes them think alike. Extroverts > marketing. PR. Analytic types > technostructure.
