My lesson notes - Responses - Phagocytosis

3 important questions on My lesson notes - Responses - Phagocytosis

How do neutrophils phagocytose?

The bacteria will be opsonized (tagged) with antibody or complement, the neutrophils attach to them via Fc or C3b receptors to form a phagosome.

Within the neutrophil, there is fusion of phagosome and lysosomes that ultimately break down the bacteria.

How do opsonins help?

They enhance recognition of bacteria by leukocytes by coating the bacteria for better recognition and attachment.

What are the different opsonins in neutrophilic phagocytosis?

1. IgG -> FcyR (acquired immunity)
2. C3b -> CR3 (innate and acquired immunity)
3. SP-A, MBL (innate immunity)
